Bachelor of Social Sciences in Sociology

The UM Sociology Undergraduate program endeavors to provide students with an understanding of the interplay between social structure and the development of individuals. Sociologists study social life, social change, diverse communities and their interactions, and they use social statistics, ethnography and demographic methods to find empirical answers to complex social questions. Studying sociology can help foster your creativity, innovation, critical and analytical thinking, and communication and collaboration skills, all of which are essential skills and in high demand in today’s complex and fast changing job markets. Numerous internship/research opportunities are available for undergraduate students in Department of Sociology, University of Macau. Our undergraduate students have opportunities to conduct original research under supervision of a faculty member and to publish research papers in international journals. Many of our undergraduate students were admitted to graduate programs in top-ranked universities, including the University of Oxford, the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, the University of Rotterdam, SOAS, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, to name a few. Our sociology graduates are in high demand in a variety of occupations that require analytical and critical minds and our sociology students have found employment in government institutions, schools, NGOs, the media industry, banks, companies, and public relations among others.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Understand and explain the relations between social structure, social organization and the individual actions.
  • Evaluate scholarly and popular texts, engage in scholarly discussion and write critical literature review.
  • Apply scientific research methods of collecting and analyzing data in order to study the social phenomena, social changes and current social issues.
  • Critically evaluate social policies and find solutions to social problems, while develop communication and collaboration skills.
  • Apply the research methods, analytical approaches, problem-solving and communication skills in project-based and practical courses such as internship, research project and independent study in Sociology.

The medium of instruction is English.

Admission Requirements

In accordance with the University Admission Regulations, applications through Admission Examination will require English I, and Mathematics B.

Graduation Requirements
  • For students admitted in 2010/2011 and before: Graduation requires a completion of a minimum of 144 credits, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (i.e. an average grade of C), and a passing grade of all compulsory/required elective courses.
  • For students admitted from 2011/2012 onwards: Graduation requires a completion of a minimum of 132 credits, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (i.e. an average grade of C), and a passing grade of all compulsory/required elective courses. Note that you can re-take a course if it is less than C (i.e., D or F), but the maximum score you can get is a C, however you do in the re-take, and no matter how many times you re-take it.
  • For students admitted from 2019/2020 onwards: Graduation requires a completion of a minimum of 120 credits, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (i.e. an average grade of C), and a passing grade of all compulsory/required elective courses. Note that you can re-take a course if it is less than C (i.e., D or F), but the maximum score you can get is a C, however you do in the re-take, and no matter how many times you re-take it.
