Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, and Visitors,
It is with immense pride that I welcome you to the Department of Sociology at the University of Macau, the only academic institution in Macao offering comprehensive training primarily in criminology, gerontology, and sociology. Our department is dedicated to fostering critical thinking, rigorous research, and a nuanced understanding of the interplay between social structures and individual lives, preparing our students to tackle complex societal challenges.
Our distinguished faculty, graduates of world-renowned institutions such as Cambridge, Harvard, the University of Hong Kong, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Maryland, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Toronto bring unparalleled expertise to our department. They conduct cutting-edge research primarily in areas such as computational social science, social demography, social epidemiology, migration, comparative criminology, policing, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, and qualitative and quantitative methods. They have published their works in such top-notch social science journals as Criminology, Demography, American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Sociological Research & Methods, and the Stata Journal.
Our teaching philosophy blends theoretical rigor with practical application, offering courses in sociology, gerontology, criminology, statistics, and research methods. We mentor students through hands-on research opportunities, such as the Macao Social Survey, and encourage publication in international journals. Our programs, including the Bachelor of Social Sciences in Sociology, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology and Criminology, equip students with the analytical tools and empirical methods needed to excel in diverse careers across government, NGOs, media, and academia. Our graduates have pursued advanced studies at prestigious institutions like the University of Oxford, the University of Chicago, and the London School of Economics, and have secured impactful roles globally.
