Dr Zheng Liu (劉崢) obtained a PhD in Sociology in 2018 at the University of Cambridge. Her research is defined by two interests: one in the intersection of business, culture and politics in cultural production, and one in the social understanding of technological advancement. Theoretically, she draws on perspectives from cultural sociology, political economy, media and cultural studies, and critical theory to analyse the cultural and technological experiences that surround and shape us. Methodologically, she is an experienced user of qualitative research methods, including interviewing, participant observation, documentary analysis, and critical discourse analysis, and is passionate about digital research methods and visualisation. Empirically, Zheng’s research has been focussed on the transformation of the bookselling industry in China, on which she is writing a book entitled (provisionally) ‘Making Culture under Authoritarian Commercialism: Independent Bookselling in China’. Her ongoing project is on the political economy of the AI industry and technological innovation in China.
